Beginner Block Printing

Course Description: 

Discover the art of block printing in this engaging 2-hour workshop! Led by instructor Kimberly Sewell, you will learn the techniques to carve and print your own unique block-printed design. Kimberly will guide you through the process of creating your image, whether from your own hand-drawn designs or from provided samples, before demonstrating how to carve, ink, and print using Speedball printmaking products. Participants may bring their own materials or opt for a supply package for an additional fee. This class is perfect for beginners, though it is not recommended for unsupervised children due to the use of sharp carving tools.

Materials:

– Speedball speedycarve 4×6″ carving mat

– Speedball carving tool with interchangeable heads

– Pencil with eraser
– Scratch paper
– 5-10 5×7″ sheets of paper suitable for block printing (recommended Speedball Arnheim print paper, bristol paper, Arches cover paper, or other thick relatively smooth paper)
– Ink pad (recommended Jacquard Colorpad ink pads or Ranger Archival Inks pad)
– (optional) Speedball barren

Artist Bio:

Kimberly Sewell is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Albuquerque, NM, specializing in relief printmaking and fiber arts. She holds an MFA from Regis University, where she studied printmaking under the guidance of artist Tony Ortega. Kimberly has taught art workshops to artists of all ages and skill levels. Her work is featured in numerous galleries and shops throughout Southern Colorado and New Mexico.
